When I was kid one of my favorite comic books was The New Mutants. It was a fun and exciting comic book series featuring young people who had super mutant abilities. What young person wouldn’t be drawn to such a story. It is always fun for as a kid to image yourself with super powers, to be able to do things so amazing, and beyond anything one can imagine.
The New Mutants were students at Professor Xavier’s School For the Gifted Youngsters; they had nice side adventures that complimented their cousins, The X-Men. They were young people with various backgrounds, and yet they all were close, and fit together well as a team.
The New Mutants Introduction
Recently, the new trailer for the movie came out, The New Mutants (2020). So far most of the actors look like their comic book counter parts. Apparently the movie had been delayed for two years. The New Mutants is now a Disney Property, since they made a deal to purchase 20th Century Fox’s (21st Century Fox) entertainment catalog. The deal was finalized on March 20, 2019 for $71.3 Billion. Now that the deal was made; movies such as The New Mutants can be released to the greater audience.
When viewing the trailer the first thing we see is a young woman laying down with what looks to be blood flowing down above her, and the wall protruding out next to her. What a way to start a preview! We learn that her name is Danni (Blu Hunt); in the comics she is known as Moonstar, taken from her character’s last name.
The setting is within what looks to be an institution, it is not clear what type of institution it is, but the setting is there to study these young people. We are briefly introduced to our main characters sitting around a group telling their origins to a female doctor (Dr. Cecilia Reyes played by Alice Braga).
First, Rahne (Maisie Williams), a pixie haired red head girl who slightly changes appearance in an animalistic way. Sam (Charlie Heaton), a young man who loses it in a mirror; his arms glow, and he reveals he is panicked, and people got hurt (from him). Roberto (Henry Zaga), a young man who states that he burnt his girlfriend; as her burnt hand creeps out of the pool behind him. Lastly, Illayna (Anya Taylor-Joy), the blonde woman with a Russian accent; she smirks, and announces she killed 18 men- one-by-one. This is not your typical superhero movie to say the least.
The New Mutants Possible Story Arc
In the comics, Danni’s powers are normally related to holograms. This could be related to certain scenes that we see within the trailer. In one scene we hear a voice stating that, “This place takes your greatest fear and makes you live through it; until it kills you.” For the comic book fan these scenes are quite familiar; if we are to cheat, and look up Danni Moonstar’s powers; we see that she can conjure up images of people’s greatest fears.
If we are to speculate further, than the plot may revolve around Moonstar’s powers, and how she may not be in control of them. Moonstar may not realize that she is causing the fear within the institute. However, the trailer does not give more of what the plot may be about. We do not see if there is a main villain, although the Dr. Reyes character does seem very mysterious.
In The New Mutants trailer there are explosions, jump scares, and a host of weird things that show up to draw in the viewer. I must admit that these scenes does peak my interest.
The scenes in the trailer does a good job of showing glimpses of their mutant abilities; fans can be excited to see how they related so well to what they are used to within the comics. For Example, at the end of the trailer Illayna, known as Magik in the comics conjures up a portal, a demon appears, and she is wielding her soulsword; these abilities are typical for her character arc in the comic book stories.
Tone Of The New Mutants Trailer
When looking at this new trailer I get the feeling that I am watching a trailer for a horror film rather than a a new comic book movie. We can see the differences in style, and writing 20th Century Fox presents than what so many people are used when watching a Disney Marvel Cinematic Universe film.
This film is more hard edged and dark. In the past, 20th Century Fox has gone dark with some of their Marvel X-men related films; for example, the character of Wolverine has had some dark toned story-lines. It’s not that I see this movie being bad, but it’s just different.
If audiences love the movie when it opens; one needs to question where does this film stand in relation to the MCU movies? Will these characters return? Or is it just a one time release? I guess we will see when it opens in theaters on April 3, 2020.
