I was riding around in the car one day when I noticed a green boxy car; it had various bumper stickers on the car. I did not care for some of those bumper stickers particularly the ones not on the bumper; but one sticker on the bumper did catch my attention. The bumper sticker said, Do One Thing Everyday That Is Scary.
I started to think about that phrase, and it makes sense. So often we trap ourselves within our own prison. We are afraid of the world, scared of what others may think of us. We are afraid to take any chances in life. Why are we sitting here all alone? Why did we make a plan, and not stick to that plan? Why did we hesitate, when we should have taken a chance and made our move?
The Two Things We Are Scared Of
The simple answer is that we are scared. Truth is the world is a scary place. I believe the two things we are afraid of the most is failure and rejection. When we fail, we feel terrible; we feel that we have let ourselves and others down. When we fail, we are afraid to try again. So we don’t take the second chance, scared that we will disappoint yet again.
Also, we are scared of- rejection. Rejection tends to have the same result as failure; it is a form of failure. Whether it is being rejected from somebody we like very much, or working very hard on a school, or on a work project, and the fear of having it harshly criticized. When we are rejected we are devastated. The image of this rejection stays embedded within our minds. Our instinct tells us to stay away from such situations, and we do. As with failure, rejection goes into our scary and stay away from file.
It is an automatic response, and we instantly build the walls around us. We lock ourselves up in order to not face what hurts us so much. I have had many failures and rejections in my life, and I must admit that it has led me into a life full of disappointments, anger, and resentment. Being scared of the world surely does lead to a life that is not very full of happiness.
Make A Scary List
That is why this phrase on the boxy car has inspired me. I/We need to do at least one thing everyday that we find scary. Make a list of things that you are scared of, and that you have avoided in the past. Start small, and make it reasonable. For example, if there is someone you like very much, and have only admired them from a distance, go up and talk to them; but if it is someone at work that you like, I probably wouldn’t ask them out on a date it may bring up to much drama in the future.
Whenever you feel anxious, take a chance and do what George Costanza of Seinfeld did- do the opposite of that feeling. Doing the opposite of what has not worked in the past is the best way to take more chances, taking more chances will lead to better experiences, and a happier life.
So, go out there. Make it your goal to go out, and do one scary thing today, and everyday after that. In the end you will knock down the walls of your prison, and reveal to the world a more bold and confident person.
